    At Pinner High School, uniform is worn to build a sense of identity and community among pupils and with their school and to promote a positive formal, professional impression, encouraging students to take pride in their appearance and the way this represents our community.

    Full uniform must be worn at all times, including on the way to and from school.

    Our policy has been reviewed and amended in accordance with relevant statutory guidance  which requires schools to have regard to the following. 

    The purpose of the statutory guidance is to ensure the cost of school uniforms is reasonable and provides the best value for money. This forms part of the government’s policies to reduce the cost of the school day and contributes to the child poverty strategy. 

    School uniform should help to build a sense of identity and community among pupils and with their school. To do this, it must be affordable. Affordability should never be a barrier to the schools for which parents apply or the activities in which children can participate.

    Schools should engage with parents and pupils when they are developing their uniform policy.

    All branded items should be kept to a minimum.

    From September 2026:

    • schools must limit the number of compulsory branded items of uniform and PE kit to 3 or fewer
    • secondary and middle schools must limit the number of compulsory branded items of uniform and PE kit to 4 or fewer, if one is a tie

    A school’s uniform policy should be:

    • published on its website
    • available for all parents, including parents of prospective pupils
    • easily understood, including clearly setting out which items are compulsory and which are optional

    Schools should ensure that their uniform supply arrangements give the highest priority to cost and value for money, including to an item’s:

    • quality
    • durability
    • sustainability

    Schools should avoid single-supplier contracts except in certain circumstances.

    Schools should ensure that opportunities to acquire second-hand uniforms are freely accessible to all parents. Information on second-hand uniforms should be clear and available to parents of both current and prospective pupils and be published on the school’s website.

    Schools do not need to require branded items to control details such as colour, shade, fabric or fit. They can set and enforce rules for generic uniform items.

    As soon as practically possible, and in time for parents to purchase uniform required for September 2027 at the latest, schools should:

    • consider whether the total cost of their uniform might deter parents, if their household is on low income, from applying to the school 
    • consider the cost of individual items, and the total cost of all required items of uniform, to ensure uniform is affordable for parents – no individual item should be unnecessarily high cost
    • take steps to minimise the cost to parents of compulsory items, especially those that are typically higher cost, such as blazers and jumpers.

     

    All items marked with an asterisk (* or **) are branded with PHS logo or school colours or are a specific, compulsory style.  Items with one * are optional. Items with two ** are compulsory. Asterisked items can be bought through either of two local suppliers, appointed on the basis that they give high priority to the cost and value for money, including the quality and durability and sustainability of garments

    Second hand uniform is available for purchase at very low prices from school. Enquiries should be made to infoaccount@pinnerhighschool.org or can be made in person at Reception.

    Financial assistance with the costs of purchasing uniform is also available for students eligible and in receipt of “targeted free school meals” (but not “expanded free school meals”. See here for further information about free school meals and this distinction.)  Enquiries about such assistance should also be addressed to infoaccount@pinnerhighschool.org or to a student’s Form Tutor or Head of Year and will be treated confidentially. 

    Students who come to school in the incorrect uniform will be asked to change. Students who repeatedly wear incorrect uniform will receive a sanction. Parents/carers may also be contacted to bring correct items into school or students may be sent home to change. We expect parents and carers to support our uniform policy at all times.

    Uniform for Years 7-11

    • PHS blazer** (compulsory item)
    • Plain white revere collar blouse or plain white buttoned up square collared shirt with PHS tie** (compulsory if collared shirt is worn)
    • Plain black traditional school trousers or plain black, fully pleated skirt (as available from our two local suppliers but also other retailers)
    • Plain black traditional school shoes (no trainers or trainer-like shoes)
    • Plain black socks or plain black/natural tights 
    • PHS jumper or cardigan* (optional item)
    • Grey, navy, black coat

    PE Kit Years 7-9

    • PHS short sleeved polo shirt** (compulsory item)
    • PHS shorts** (compulsory item)
    • PHS sports socks (optional; other dark green sports socks can be worn) for winter outdoor sport; short white socks may be worn for indoor lessons and in the summer
    • PHS long-sleeved reversible top* (optional item)
    • Black tracksuit trousers
    • Sports footwear eg: football boots, outdoor trainers, indoor trainers (with non-marking soles) as appropriate.
    • Protective accessories eg: shin pads for contact sports as appropriate.

    PE Kit Years 10-11

    • PHS short sleeved polo shirt** (compulsory item)
    • PHS shorts** (compulsory item)
    • PHS sports socks* (optional; other dark green sports socks can be worn) for winter outdoor sport; short white socks may be worn for indoor lessons and in the summer.
    • PHS long-sleeved reversible top* (optional item)
    • Black tracksuit trousers 
    • Sports footwear eg: football boots, outdoor trainers, indoor trainers (with non-marking soles) as appropriate.
    • Protective accessories eg: shin pads for contact sports

    Please note that students will be required to wear their PE kit during all PE lessons even if they are unable to participate due to an injury or parental note. In such circumstances, students will be given an active role in the lesson, such as officiating or coaching, so they are still able to benefit from the learning. If students do not bring in their own kit, one will be provided.

    Other requirements

    • No skinny fit/stretch/denim/cord/jersey/chino/combat-style/fashion trousers
    • No straight/a-line/stretchy/jersey/denim/cord/skater-style/mini skirts – a fully pleated skirt like the skirt from our suppliers must be worn.
    • Skirts must be worn knee-length or longer
    • No trainers or trainer-like shoes; no boots
    • No t-shirts/undershirts that can be seen under a shirt/blouse.
    • Head scarves/hair bands must be plain, dark colours.
    • No signs, slogans or brand names.
    • No denim/leather/leather look jackets.
    • No caps, bandanas or other headwear which is not either part of uniform or worn for religious reasons.
    • No badges apart from school badges (including on coats)
    • No hoodies.
    • No tattoos; tattoos are illegal for under 18s. 
    • No jewellery except a single pair of small stud ear-rings and a wrist watch.
    • Hair must be of a natural colour, be worn clear off the face and not cut or styled in an extreme way.
    • Make-up must be subtle; long, false eyelashes are not permitted.
    • Nails must be of a short, practical length and a natural colour; Acrylic, false and decorated nails are not permitted.
    • Nose studs are permitted, however these should be small in size and discreet. Nose rings are not permitted.

    All matters of uniform, dress and appearance will be considered in a way that upholds the intention of uniform: to build a sense of identity and community among pupils and with their school and to promote a positive formal, professional impression, encouraging students to take pride in their appearance and the way this represents our community. The final decision about any matter of uniform lies with the Headteacher.
