The Library and Learning Resource Centre is located on the 2nd floor between the Art and Science corridors and is open from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Thursday, and from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on Friday, including at break and lunchtime.
Our goal is to provide a welcoming space to catalyse in our students a lifelong relationship with reading as a tool of learning, entertainment, and wellbeing.
We aim to:
-
Foster independent study and resilience in learning
-
Encourage a commitment to regular reading
-
Help students understand the library's functions, promoting adaptability and open-mindedness
-
Support our students to explore knowledge, creativity and awareness in an atmosphere rooted in kindness, respect, calm and compassion.
Our library houses over 5,000 books and continues to grow to meet the evolving needs of our community. We offer a diverse selection of fiction, non-fiction, Manga, and graphic novels, sparking creativity and enthusiasm for reading. In addition, students have access to computers, newspapers, and magazines to support homework and research. This environment fosters a sense of responsibility, encouraging students to balance their academic pursuits with personal interests.
The Library features an extensive reference section and a dedicated area for textbooks and revision guides, which are regularly updated to align with curriculum changes. There is also a section of our library providing career resources to help our students think about university and professional choices ahead. Sixth Form students are invited to use the library during their free periods, to undertake independent study in a quiet and focused environment. Other year groups may use the library before and after school, during break and lunchtime and for certain scheduled lessons.
Students are allowed to borrow up to three books for a two-week period, with the option to renew them and we try to promote a sense of responsibility in caring for and respecting the resources available.
To ensure a respectful and balanced environment, we ask students to adhere to our code of conduct:
-
The library is designated for study sessions and quiet reading
-
Food and drinks are not permitted
-
Computers are for academic use only, requiring users to act with integrity and responsibility
-
Mobile phone use is prohibited in the library (as elsewhere in school)
To maintain an atmosphere of respect and collaboration, students who fail to follow the code of conduct will be asked to leave.
Throughout the year, we organise a variety of events, including poetry competitions, poetry slams, author visits, World Book Day celebrations, and reading challenges. These activities inspire students to engage with courage, enthusiasm, and collaboration, whether they choose to participate directly or support their peers.
Alongside these activities, students in Years 7 and 8 participate in regular library lessons that provide structured reading opportunities with guidance from adults. This not only enhances their confidence but also fosters perseverance in developing their literacy skills.
We also have a wonderful virtual library containing a constantly evolving collection of eBooks and audiobooks. Staff and students can log into this here https://pinnerhigh.oliverasp.co.uk/library/home/news using Google Classroom login credentials. Additionally, an app for smartphones and tablets is available, providing even more flexibility and adaptability in learning.
At the Library and Learning Resource Centre, we take pride in providing a safe, tranquil, and supportive environment for both students and staff, conducive to personal and academic growth and wellbeing.
