Why you should choose Pinner High School.
I was delighted to meet so many people at our recent open events. With nearly 1,200 people attending I was unfortunately unable to talk to everyone personally, but hopefully our website (and associated Facebook page and tweets) are providing more information. The unspoken key question was "why should we choose Pinner High School?", and that's what this blog post focuses on.
The Governors and I intend for Pinner High School to be a truly excellent school and we want our vision, drive and determination to resonate throughout the community. As the deadline for submitting your application for a secondary school place approaches I thought I would take the opportunity to remind you of what Pinner High School offers.
A personal experience: Pinner High School will be smaller than many of the local high schools, and our students’ experiences will be characterised by being known individually, having personalised and attentive pastoral care, all coupled with the closest scrutiny and tracking of their learning.
Amazing facilities: Pinner High School has wonderful premises, with onsite playing fields and outstanding facilities that are being further enhanced through a £6 million refurbishment that includes creating a new Design and Technology suite and new ICT infrastructure and equipment.
Building on local excellence: Pinner High School is able to combine the benefits of being a new school with the security of being set up by local high schools who have a long track record of achieving excellent outcomes for children. Their values and curriculum have influenced our approaches, allowing us to utilise their excellence while innovating where that is appropriate:
Stretching curriculum: We will follow the national curriculum, and begin Key Stage 4 in year 9. Our Key Stage 3 curriculum will be broad and balanced, including Chinese and Spanish, while Key Stage 4 will allow students to achieve the English Baccalaureate range of subjects.
Traditional values: We have high aspirations for, and expectations of, our students and staff. Pinner High School will be founded on mutual respect with calm discipline. We will support students’ development of the values and qualities that will help them in their adult life such as leadership, resilience, curiosity, analysis, collaboration, and tolerance.
Extended day, extensive enrichment: Four days a week, Pinner High School will offer an extended school day in which the seventh period will focus especially on enrichment activities. The enrichment opportunities will include sporting, musical and performance opportunities, outdoor adventure and community-orientated activities, and a wide range of other interests. We will use our house system, the extended school day and the Head’s Challenge (modelled on the Duke Of Edinburgh Award Scheme for children who are not old enough to start Duke of Edinburgh) to further build our students’ skills and attitudes.
Leadership and staff – cream of the crop: It is a tremendous privilege to be able to recruit all of our staff. I will begin the recruitment for our leadership posts (including the Heads of Maths, English, and Science) shortly, and will be looking for outstanding experienced staff who share my ambition and who will bring our motto of ‘inspiring learning’ to life. I expect to receive strong applications from individuals who are as excited as I am by the chance to shape a school from its beginning.
Writing this reminds me that I really do have the best job in the world.
